Retail Design Institute
2013 International Retail Design Competition

The Retail Design Institute invites contract design firms and retail in-house design teams to submit projects for the 43rd Annual International Retail Design Competition.

Eligible projects are those completed between November 1, 2012 and November October 31, 2013. The original retail design competition attracts the best of the best in Retail Design worldwide. The industry's only totally peer reviewed competition, managed by each chapter in turn. An average of over 200 international entrants vie for top awards. The Retail Design Institute's competition celebrates exceptional retail design projects. From full-line department stores to manufacturers showrooms, a full spectrum of retail design is represented through 20 competition categories.

Winners of the 2013 competition, including Store of the Year, will be announced at a special banquet and awards ceremony to be held in January 2014, concurrent with the National Retail Federations annual convention in New York.

The early bird entry deadline is October 18, 2013, and the last day entries will be accepted is November 1, 2013. Information on the competition, how to enter, and entry forms are available at



Retail Design Institute Conference

Inaugural Conference a hit!

More than 120 people attended the very successful first one day Retail Design Institute conference on July 26 at Inlite in Melbourne. Visitors from Adelaide and Sydney attended along with retailers, designers, and architects.

Recognising Ron Watkins for his contribution to Visual Merchandising

Ron Watkins, supporter of the retail design and visual merchandising industries for many years was recognised at the inaugural Retail Design Institute Conference on July 26 in Melbourne. Ron has been instrumental in Visual Merchandising education for over 30 years, first as Head of Course at RMIT University, and now runs a hands on experiential VM Course at Kangan Institute.
Whilst at RMIT University, Ron collaborated with Industry to have the course accredited by the Federal Government as a 2 year Diploma Course. In 2002, the course became the National educational benchmark for Visual Merchandising in Australia and one of the leading Visual Merchandising courses in the world.
Students learn the process of designing and creating displays, art & design history, communication, how to use colour, lighting, space, photography, about using sensory inputs such as smell, touch, and sound, and also the use of technologies for planning, graphics, digital displays and interactive installations.
Ron is a member of the Retail Design Institute and has been proactive in supporting the Institute's goals and informing students of the Institute's role in the industry.
